Traffic restrictions being imposed on the occasion of UPA chairperson and AICC president, Mrs Sonia Gandhi’s visit to Nellore on July 17 is certain to cause hardship to citizens of the town as well as those travelling by public transport. Buses, including the APSRTC fleet will be off the roads in Nellore for at least four hours between 9 am and 1 pm on Thursday and long distance buses bound for Nellore from are likely to skip the town in the wake of these restrictions. The town, especially the area between Magunta Subbarami Reddy statue and Ayyappa temple is going to be a virtual fortress with police everywhere as the Mrs Sonia Gandhi’s programmes are slated to take place at the Police Parade Grounds and AC Subba Reddy Sports Stadium. Vehicle movement will not be allowed on Podalakur Road and GNT Road from 9 am. Approximately three lakh people who are being mobilised for Sonia Gandhi’s public meeting will have to walk at least two to three kms to reach the public meeting venue, the AC Subba Reddy stadium. As many as 1,800 buses and 800 trucks are being pressed into service to bring people to the public meeting. Vehicles coming from Jonnawada side have to halt at Irugalamma temple area near Mulapeta and those coming from Gudur side have to park near Ayyappa temple. A parking area has been allotted near the Iskcon temple and bypass road for the vehicles coming from Kavali side. Mrs Sonia Gandhi is going to launch the second phase of Arogya Sri scheme at this venue. Giving details of the restrictions to mediapersons here on Monday, the district superintendent of police (SP), Mr B. Malla Reddy, urged people to cooperate with police. He said that they were mobilising 2,000 policemen for security arra-ngements. Additional forces were being drafted from Kurnool, Kadapa, Chittoor and Guntur districts. Meanwhile, Congress legislators of the district are busy in organising party meetings at mandals to mobilise people. Targets have been fixed for legislators with respect to mobilisation of people and the pressure is more on MLAs of segments located close to Nellore town. Sources said that legislators of Kovur, Allur, Surveyaplli and Rapur have been allotted 200 buses and 200 trucks each to bring people to the public meeting.
